Basic configuration when install an Ubuntu Server

1. Enable root account.

2. Edit /etc/network/interfaces to configure network; then   ifdown eth0 & ifup eth0 to restart network.

an example of interfaces file:

# The loopback interface

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface

auto eth0

iface eth0 inet static

address 192.168.1.133

gateway 192.168.1.1

netmask 255.255.255.0

network 192.168.1.0

broadcast 192.168.1.255

dns-nameservers  64.59.144.18 64.59.144.19 (very important for update and apt-get)

3. SSH: sudo apt-get install openssh-server

start ssh: service ssh start

4. user and group creation

5. FTP

6. File System (when you need to add the second harddrive or third harddrive)

7.  apt-get update

8. apt-get upgrade

9. Samba
